The One Question That Tells You Which Version Is Leading

Most of us move through the day not knowing which part of us is making decisions. Soul or survival. There's a question that reveals it instantly.

There's a moment before every decision where you can catch it. Before you make the call. Before you send the message. Before you walk into the meeting. A split second where you can ask yourself one question that changes everything.

Which version of me is leading right now?

Not which version should be leading. Not which version you wish was leading. Which one actually is.

Because here's what most people miss: you're not one person. You're at least two. There's the version of you that knows what's true before evidence arrives. The version that recognized itself in a moment at twelve years old watching someone on TV and thought not "I want to be that" but "I am that." The version that draws the backyard at nine, fully alive, creating from the inside out. That's soul. That's the knowing.

And then there's the version that's been built by every time you got burned. Every deal that fell through. Every month you weren't sure how you'd make it. The version that scans for threat, measures risk, reminds you of every time it didn't work. That's mind. That's survival.

Neither one is wrong. The mind is a remarkable tool. It keeps you alive. It builds the road. But it's a poor navigator. It doesn't know where you're actually going. It only knows where you've been and what hurt.

The soul knows the destination. It speaks in certainty before logic arrives. It's the part of you that knew you'd close the deal before you had any evidence. The part that recognized safety in a laugh with the person you love when the bank account said panic.

Most people never ask the question. They just react. And reaction always comes from survival. It has to. That's its job. But if you never ask which version is leading, you'll spend your entire life being directed by the part of you that's designed to keep you small.

The Question in Real Time

I use it in the middle of the day. Before a decision. Sometimes during one. Which version of me is leading right now? And the answer is immediate. You feel it. If there's tightness, if there's a clench in the chest, if the thought is rooted in "what if I lose this" — that's survival. If there's calm, if there's clarity, if the thought is rooted in "this is already mine" — that's soul.

The bridge is the awareness that can hold both and choose. It's not about eliminating the mind. It's about knowing when to let it drive and when to put the soul back in command. The mind builds. The soul leads. The bridge decides.

I write about this kind of thing every week in the Win The Day dispatch — the tools that actually work when you're still inside the build, not looking back on it.

So before your next move, ask it. Which version of me is leading right now? Then decide if that's the version you want making the call.
